Re:      Qualifying for Cadet and Junior National Team (Team Washington)

CLUBS PLEASE DISTRIBUTE THIS TO ALL CLUB MEMBERS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. IT CONTAINS VALUABLE AND TIMELY INFORMATION FOR THE QUALIFIYING PROCESS FOR THE CADET AND JUNIOR FREESTYLE AND GRECO-ROMAN NATIONAL TEAMS.

For a wrestler to qualify for the Cadet or Junior Freestyle / Greco-Roman National team (Team Washington), you must place in the top three of your weight class and division at the Washington State Freestyle and/or Greco-Roman Championships. The 4th, 5th, and 6th place finishers in each weight class and division will be alternates in that order (the 3rd place finisher can be challenged by a petition process - see below). The National Championships will be held in Fargo, North Dakota from July 20th through July 27th, 2002 (team travel dates are July 18th or 19th, 2002 and July 28th, 2002).

If you want to wrestle in both styles at Nationals, then you must qualify in both styles at both State Championships, unless you have already pre-qualified at one of the Junior Regional tournaments held by USA Wrestling around the country. The same applies for these Junior division qualifiers. The top three place finishers are automatically qualified and are added to the team in their State in which they reside and attend school full time.

You can only wrestle in that style and weight which you qualified for at those Regional tournaments. Some Junior division wrestlers have already pre-qualified through other Regional tournaments. This will allow for more spots on the National team(s) as they do not need to attend the Freestyle and Greco-Roman State Championships.

The first State Championship will be the Washington State Cadet and Junior Freestyle Championships and will be held at Everett High School in Everett, Washington on Saturday, April 20th, 2002.

The second State Championship will be the Washington State Midget through Junior Greco-Roman Championships and will be held at Emerald Ridge High School in Puyallup, Washington on Saturday, May 4th, 2002.

If a Cashier's Check or Money Order is not in the Deputy Director's hands at the specified time for the amount of this initial deposit, the first alternate (4th place finisher) will receive your spot on the team. The total amount due will be announced after all team expense bids are received. The average cost for the past two years have been $1100.00 and are sent to WSWA in three payments - the initial deposit is one of those payments. The Cashier's Check's or Money orders are made out to Washington State Wrestling Association or WSWA - No Cash or Personal Checks accepted.

This year’s State Championships will have direct crossing of "A" & "B" pooled brackets. WSWA is bound by it's procedures and guidelines which state they must follow the same format of the National team format in which they are attending. The 1st place finisher of the "A" pool will wrestle the 1st place finisher of the "B" pool to determine the State Champion and Runner up. The 2nd place finisher of the "A" pool will wrestle the 2nd place finisher of the "B" pool to determine 3rd and 4th place. The 3rd place finishers will wrestle each other to determine 5th and 6th place (1st through 6th place Cadets are also qualified to wrestle at the Kids/Cadet Western Regional Championships in Butte, Montana June 17th, 2002 through June 22nd, 2002).

Your first responsibility in making the National Team(s) is to wrestle in the State Championship(s).

If you are unable to attend due to a school event, i.e. Medical condition or were competing at a higher level competition, then you may be granted a petition to challenge onto the team. The challenger would wrestle all other petitioners in that weight, with the winner then wrestling the 3rd place finisher from the State Tournament(s). Petition forms must be mailed in by May 15th, 2002 unless the condition precludes that. The challenge dates / sites will be selected by the Directors.

All money and payments for the National team fees needs to be sent to:
