NEW FORMAT BEING USED AT WORLD TEAM TRIALS IN IOWA, MAY 27-28 – There will be a new format used this year at the U.S. World Team Trials, set for Sioux City, Iowa, May 27-28. Each of the weight classes will be contested in one day. Only two athletes, Justin Ruiz in Greco-Roman and Tolly Thompson in freestyle, have clinched a spot in the championship series.

WRESTLING LEADER JOHN VAUGHAN, 91, PASSED AWAY IN FLORIDA – John Vaughan, 91, a longtime leader within USA Wrestling and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, passed away in Tampa, Fla. on April 29. Vaughan and his wife Helen were among the most active supporters of wrestling worldwide. He was revered within the wrestling community.

WOMEN’S WRESTLING SPRING/SUMMER SCHEDULE RELEASED – USA Wrestling’s National Women’s Coaches have released a complete schedule of events, training camps and opportunities for female wrestlers of all ages for the rest of the 2006 wrestling season.

FRASER, ANDERSON, BYERS IN FREE CLINIC IN NEW JERSEY, MAY 7 – Olympians and National Coaches Steve Fraser and Ike Anderson, along with 2002 World Champion Dremiel Byers, will be in the Clinic of Champions at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J., Sunday, May 7 from noon – 6:00 p.m. The clinic is free for all USA Wrestling members.

GRECO-ROMAN RULES AND TACTICS DVD NOW AVAILABLE – A special DVD, featuring National Greco-Roman Coaches Momir Petkovic and Ike Anderson, is now available, covering the rules and tactics of Greco-Roman. It focuses on strategies for success under the new rules. The $24.95 price is available through June 1st. A must for coaches and athletes at all levels.

PAN AM SOMBO QUALIFIER IN WASHINGTON, D.C., MAY 5-6 – USA Wrestling will be hosting the Pan American Sombo Qualifier at American Univ. in Washington D.C. Weigh-ins are on Friday, May 5 and competition is Saturday May 6. Winners have first option to compete at the Pan American Championships in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, May 31-June 4.

JOHNSON WINS ULTIMATE DOMINATOR, NINE BELTS AWARDED – Michael Johnson, Jr. of Illinois won the Ultimate Dominator Award, the top point scorer in the ASICS Ultimate Challenge Series of Folkstyle wrestling. Nine Dominator belts were awarded, three in each age division, after the completion of the series at the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals.

TED DEROUSSE TO RETIRE FROM USA WRESTLING STAFF AFTER 13 YEARS – Ted DeRousse, USA Wrestling’s Manager of State Services for 13 years, has announced his retirement. He has worked closely with volunteers and managed events on the grassroots level for the organization. A retirement celebration will be held for DeRousse in Fargo, N.D. in July.

KIDS/CADET REGIONALS TO BEGIN IN MAY – USA Wrestling’s popular Kids/Cadet Regionals will begin in May, with six Regionals in freestyle and Greco-Roman. A change this year is that Cadets may enter any and all Regionals, regardless of where they live. All athletes that wish to compete in the Kids FS and GR Nationals in Green Bay must attend their Regional event.

THREE CAMP OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN AT NORTHERN MICHIGAN – The USOEC women’s wrestling program will be hosting three different camp opportunities this year in their facility at Northern Michigan Univ. There will be a University World Training Camp, a Women’s Recruiting Camp and one of the All-American Summer Camp for girls.

USA WRESTLING HONORS ITS MAN AND WOMAN OF THE YEAR – USA Wrestling has named Al Bevilacqua of the Metropolitan Wrestling Association as its Man of the Year and Kim Martori-Wickey of the Sunkist Kids as its Woman of the Year, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the sport.

NCEP SILVER COACHES COLLEGE SET FOR WORLD TEAM TRIALS – USA Wrestling will host an NCEP Silver level Coaches College alongside the U.S. World Team Trials in men’s wrestling, set for Sioux City, Iowa, May 27-28. Participants in the Silver College will have three days of classroom instruction prior to the start of the competition.

NATIONAL WRESTLING LEGENDS FUND SET UP TO SUPPORT WRESTLING – USA Wrestling and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame have combined efforts to establish the National Wrestling Legends Fund. This program allows people to support the programs of both organizations. Author John Irving is the Honorary Chairman. A special website has been set up for this new program.
